The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, victim triage and first aid. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when public safety personnel are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
The CERT course will benefit any citizen who takes it. This individual will be better prepared to respond to and cope with the aftermath of a disaster. The citizens can provide immediate assistance to victims in their area, organize spontaneous volunteers who have not had the training, and collect disaster information that will assist professional responders with prioritization and allocation of resources following a disaster. The CERT program is an official emergency preparedness program administered under the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Anyone who lives or works in the Town of Davie is eligible for the free training. Participants must be over 18 years of age. The Town of Davie will be offering the 8 week basic CERT training in September/October 2011 (we need 15 people registered to start the class). The classes will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:00-9:00pm and be held at the Davie Fire Rescue Administration Building, located at 6901 Orange Drive, Davie, FL 33314.
